I2060: Installed but Stopped when using Windows Groups
Summary
Product: FreeProxy
Versions: 3.9 onwards (WINNT, 2000, XP, 2003)
Note: 2060
Date reported: 22 February 2006

Issue Detail
Crashes and errors when using Windows Groups.

Symptoms of this problem are are associated with using windows groups. In the Control Centre, you would have "Imported a windows group" or selected NTLM as the authentication method. When the server is run as a service it eventually stops with "Installed but Stopped" as the comment in the Start/Stop dialog.

Solution
The problem in many cases relates to the fact that the service is being started with the local system account. A preferable way is to start the service with a domain user and password that is both a local administrator and has the "Start of a service" right.

Here is a workaround pending the changes in build 1604 which will allow you to specify the user/password to start the service with.

1. Start FreeProxy as a service
2. You need to catch it before it crashes. Using the Services Applet (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services), right-click "Free Proxy Service", and select "Stop". You must stop it using the services applet as this stops the service without removing it.
3. Right-click "Free Proxy Service" again and select "Properties". In the properties dialog, click the "Log on tab". Click the Radio Button "This account" and fill in the domain user and password as directed. Click "Apply".
4. To check whether the user you have used has the Service Start permission, from the control panel select "Administrative tools" -> "Local Policy Editor". In Local Policies click on User Rights Assignment. Double click on "Log on as a Service. The user you have used in step 3 above should listed in this Right. If not, add the user using the "Add User or Group" button.
5. Start the service: Right-click "Free Proxy Service" and select Start.
