I2049: Setting up MSN Messenger 6.1 or later with SOCKS 4
Summary
Product: FreeProxy
Versions: MSN Messenger 6.1 or later, FreeProxy V3.62 or later
Note: 2049 supercedes note 2009.
Date reported: 23 June 2004

Issue Detail
Can't connect MSN Messenger.

Solution
This note describes MSN messenger 6.1 or later. If you don't have this version or later, download the latest version from msn.com. Its a free download.
The FreeProxy help file describes the set up of MSN messenger with SOCKS 5, this note is a simpler setup with SOCKS4. The essential difference is that you do not have to have to specify a user.

Steps.
  1. Set up FreeProxy
  2. Set up MSN

Set up FreeProxy
Set up 2 ports. The first is a HTTP Proxy port. You would already have set one up; the default port installed with the program is sufficient.
Now set up a socks port as follows:

Note: Always use local binding. The IP address you select is the local LAN IP address NOT the internet IP address. After you have made the change,
  • save the config file
  • stop and start FreeProxy
.
Set up MSN Messenger
In MSNM select Tools -> Options -> Connection and fill in the following options.

The important fields to note are
  • Check "I use a proxy server"
  • SOCKS Version 4
  • Use the name of your server as the server name (don't write MYSERVER)
  • The port number is the 'client port' you selected when setting up the SOCKs port in FreeProxy. If you took the default option then the port number is 1080
